If you could be someone else for a day, who would you be, and why?

As a huge Star Trek fan, I would be Captain James T. Kirk for the day. I’d lead a mission to go boldly where no one has gone before. When I watch the show, however, there is something that irks me. I’m often struck by the brilliant design of the Starship Enterprise. It’s a beautiful design in my opinion; however, its sleek looks betray a whopping design flaw. Although it possesses artificial gravity onboard, its huge, disc-shaped hull would not be able to overcome other forces of motion such as pitch, rolling, and surge. When it tilts to either side, up or down, everyone would roll with it, as sailors do onboard an ocean ship. There are lots of times you see the Enterprise rolling around in battle, but only minimal disruption occurs to the movement of the crew.

This is why I decided to redesign it. If the ship’s decks were built around a gyroscope structure, it would always orient them in the same direction, whichever way the ship flew. The rest of the hull could swivel around the central decks, allowing it to fly in any direction without compromising the orientation of the crew. That said, the outer hull disc would still be subject to rolling and pitching, so perhaps magnetic boots would be needed in these areas. So yeah. The Enterprise needed a revamp!

Love this! I am a lifelong Star Trekker also. Now that you pointed out the rolling flaw I will not be able to think about anything else. Lol

Ha ha I know what you mean. Once seen never forgotten. Loving the new Star Fleet Academy though and the Captain Pike series. Trekkie at its best!
