Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?

Kirkstone Pass, Lake District

I’m not sure you can call the peaks of the Lake District mountains, but if they qualify, then I’d always go for them over the ocean. The huge, colossal size of mountains always moves me. Their vast, ancient power holds such a sway over my emotions, I cannot help but be humbled by them, and reminded that they have been moulded and shaped by forces of nature. They were here long before I was born, and they will be here long after I’m gone. Mountains calm my anxious mind and anchor my thoughts.

That said, I do love a good stormy ocean, (so long as I’m safely on dry land while I’m watching it). The almighty power of the waves as they boom against the rocks, the beautiful foamy white water – they invigorate and empower me. I find a stormy sea so energising.

So, while I prefer a mountain over the ocean, it is a close call, and in any case, I love them both in different ways, at different times. This is the beauty of living where I do. I’m a ten-minute drive from the beautiful Northumberland coast and a two-hour drive from the fabulous Lake District or Scotland. Nature is such a giving, sublime force.
