What’s your favorite game (card, board, video, etc.)? Why?

Deacon St. John

My favourite game is an apocalyptic computer game about a drifter on a motorbike called Deacon St. John. It’s called Days Gone, and it’s incredibly difficult to beat the zombie hordes. You have to gather a lot of resources, then lay them out like traps, which don’t always work. Defeating those hordes felt like a monumental life achievement! I’m not a very good gamer, so it was especially difficult for me to do. Personally, I loved just riding around the beautiful open world on my bike.

Deacon has a fellow grifter called Boozer who helps him on some of his missions, and a girlfriend called Sarah. At the very end of the game, Boozer and Sarah sit on the porch while Deacon rides out on a final mission. You can walk up to them, but you can’t talk to them, which creates a really spooky, ghostly effect. It felt like they were Platonic shadows, impressions of people I knew and loved. It’s ridiculous, but it made me sad to leave them there, and I guess that’s the mark of a great game.

Sounds like one of those emotionally sad, hard games to beat
