Do you vote in political elections?
I’m what they call a floating voter. I don’t affiliate myself to any one party because I prefer to use reason and judgment about which party I think will best represent the country or the authority at the time. I’d describe myself politically as just left of centre, with a little smidgeon of the right thrown in for good measure. I tend to vote for parties that stand on equality, the environment, and social change. I guess that makes me liberal and progressive according to most people’s definitions.
In my mind what I’m opposed to is the upper middle class elitism that dogs our country. Time and time again the Conservatives are voted in power. I honestly think people are so indoctrinated into being ruled by Tory Toffs that they cannot see what is happening.
Social mobility in the UK is appallingly bad. There are not enough opportunities for people at the bottom to get on. People born at the bottom stay at the bottom. The top civil service jobs are reserved for the elite, the judges, the top bankers, city financiers, the politicians, all predominantly from top public schools in the south. It’s a system designed to keep money and power in the same hands.
The Conservatives brainwash people into believing that the Strict Father model of rule is best for the country. Read George Lakoff’s book Don’t Think of an Elephant. It’s a model of governance that dominated the old British Empire. People need tough rule, benefits should be cut, people not working are scroungers, addiction is all the fault of the addicted, all immigration is bad, children must be instilled with strong discipline. It makes no allowances for the poverty stricken circumstances people are placed in or lack of opportunity. The best minds and talent don’t succeed, the most privileged do.
And all the while the real wealth and power remains in their hands. The same hands it has stayed in for generations. The Empire is living and breathing.
