What’s the most fun way to exercise?

After a lifetime of being a couch potato, I got into the gym in my late fifties and started going 4 times a week. I would do weights, cardio and aerobic. I could bench press 50kg, deadlift 120kg, and easily do a one hour body pump class. I felt really fit, really strong, but it’s difficult to keep up with that amount of commitment.

Then I got injured and was laid up for three months. Other ailments added to my misery and before I knew it, I stopped going. I tried to get back into it in other ways. I bought a meta-quest headset and did virtual exercising, even hooking it up to my cross-trainer so I could exercise in imaginary worlds. It was good for a while, but then again, poor health hindered my progress.

I know some people like to run, but not me. I love walking 🚶‍♂️. I’m always motivated to do it, I get a buzz from doing it, and I can think and clear my head. I take photos, absorb the scenery, and listen to the birds. That’s my idea of heaven. It’s walking for me from now on.

Holodia fitness on Meta Quest is fun but hard to keep up
I’m always motivated to walk. I get to see beautiful sights such as this ruined church in Tynemouth

Some people prefer walking, while others enjoy running. Both have their unique benefits, but walking offers the chance to truly savor the moment. It’s an opportunity to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the beauty of the surroundings. There’s something special about taking your time to notice the little details in nature that might be missed when you’re rushing by.
