What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

My father had a tradition of leaving us to go to the pub and always being drunk. When I became a parent, I didn’t really know what a good father was, but I figured if I just did all the things I wished my father had done I should be fine, and I was.

My mother had a tradition of smacking us, and threatening us with a big stick, that she kept in the corner of the living room. When I became a parent, I decided hitting my children was not a good idea. I was accused of being too soft with my kids but they weren’t unruly, they were polite and well behaved. My family had a tradition of going to church every Sunday and worshipping every feast day. I decided that it was not a path I wanted to go down so I abandoned the Catholic Church at a young age. All in all, my family, church and school had a tradition of being very strict. Discipline was a good virtue apparently. I replaced discipline with love, kindness and understanding. It seems to have served me, and my family better.
