Describe your dream chocolate bar.

I don’t have a dream chocolate bar because I don’t eat chocolate. It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s more that it makes me feel sick, and I put weight on. If milk chocolate makes me nauseous, I find dark chocolate too bitter and not that palatable. While I’ve never been overly fussed about chocolate, I can’t deny it is big business. In 2014 U.S. chocolate sales were $21.1 billion, so I’m clearly one of the few who don’t see its appeal.

People seem to love chocolate! The Aztecs valued it so highly that they used it as a form of currency. Aztec emperor Montezuma consumed 50 goblets of chocolate every day. It’s easy to see why people like it so much however, because eating chocolate can be addictive. A bar of dark chocolate contains as much caffeine as a can of coca-cola.

They might not be in such a rush to eat it if they knew that the average chocolate bar contains as many as 60 fragments of insects! So, people literally become addicted to insects. Think about that the next time you pick a raisin out of a fruit and nut. Is it really a raisin?

The other reason people become addicted to chocolate however, is because of its mood enhancing properties. Chocolate is rich in the chemicals the brain uses to produce serotonin, and it can procure the release of endorphins. Knowing this, you’d think I would eat ten bars of the stuff a day! Maybe I will have to start. If it wasn’t for those pesky insects.
