There’s a fundamental difference between the approach western philosophy takes to living and that practised in the east.
Truth Seekers – Western philosophy and science seeks to find the ’truth’ of nature and reality. It tries to describe the basic structure of reality, logic, science, language, and the mind.
Way Seekers – Chinese philosophy on the other hand, is more concerned with living a better life, being a good person, a good father, or a good son, which is generated through your action and deeds.
Seeking truth has given western society many technological benefits and health advantages, but I think we struggle to find meaning. Way seeking helps us lead more fulfilled lives, but technological, scientific and medical advances are not as substantial. Personally, I think we have to navigate a path between them both, which isn’t always easy to do. Taken from the book How the World Thinks by Julian Baggini.
