What experiences in life helped you grow the most?

My first thought was: grow in what way? Growth can be negative as well as positive, and so, all life is growth; some good, some not so good. Next, I’d ask: what were my ambitions and end goals, because these significantly affect how I’d view what was positive or negative growth.

I’m sorry if I sound picky here, that’s not my intention. The thing is, I just wandered aimlessly through my whole life. I’m nearly 62 now, and to be honest, I didn’t seek anything substantial from life in terms of money, property, success or wealth. I see so many young people talk about ambition, how important it is to have a great career and ‘do well’, but that was never my goal. What I sought was love, inner peace and the ability to do something meaningful with my various artistic endeavours.

What helped me grow in those terms was getting a divorce from a toxic relationship and meeting the love of my life, who has brought such a beautiful calmness to me. I’m so grateful to her for helping me grow through her gentle, strong wisdom and advice.

Then, going to art college and learning from some great teachers. Their lessons have stayed with me to this day and I thank them enormously. I am an artist today because of them.

I’d also say that the experience of knowing myself. I’ve always had an open mind, a never-ending curiosity to learn and grow. I try hard not to judge without thinking first. I try to listen to others and hear what they say, without talking over them. I am open to being wrong, I doubt myself but back myself too. I know I am not perfect and I will continue to try to develop myself and learn until the day I die.

Finally, I came to learn that there are no ultimate truths, only perspectives. Too many people think they have the answer and shout it from the rooftops. They are never right. We can only ever know our own mind, have our own experience and so talk from the first person perspective. If you think you have the truth, I’m pleased for you, but it’s your truth, not mine.
